Sculpture White: A Unique Blend of Architecture and Sculpture

Residential villa designed by Huang Ching-Wen

Inspired by the idea of a building as a sculpture, Huang Ching-Wen has created a masterpiece that combines the elegance of architecture with the creativity of sculpture. The Sculpture White villa, located in Miaoli, Taiwan, is a stunning example of how art, design, and innovation can come together to create a truly unique living space.

The exterior of the villa is a work of art in itself. Huang Ching-Wen has used a combination of materials, including granite, German paint, and metal pieces, to create a visually striking facade. The granite slabs, carefully positioned on the outer walls, are the same size as the windows, creating a harmonious and balanced look. These windows, although seemingly regular, offer different views of the surrounding scenery, adding a touch of intrigue to the design.

One of the challenges faced during the construction of the villa was maintaining the cleanliness of the exterior. To overcome this, metal plates were installed under possible drip lines to redirect water and prevent it from affecting the paint coating. This attention to detail ensures that the villa remains pristine and visually appealing.

Inside the Sculpture White villa, the layout has been thoughtfully designed to maximize space and create a sense of relaxation. Essential spaces are lined up on the east side of the foundation, allowing the west side to showcase different layers of the architecture. A straight set of stairs on the sturdy east wall leads to a little courtyard that allows natural light to reach the first floor. On the white wall, a customized metal sculpture changes in different lighting, creating captivating shadows that dance throughout the day.

The design of the Sculpture White villa reflects the philosophy of simplicity and pure spatial aesthetics. The clean lines, white walls, and carefully placed windows create a sense of tranquility and harmony. The architecture interacts with light and space, blurring the boundaries between indoor and outdoor living.

The Sculpture White villa, completed in February 2016, stands as a testament to the power of design and innovation. Its unique blend of architecture and sculpture creates a living space that is not only visually stunning but also provides a carefree and enjoyable experience for its residents.

Awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018, the Sculpture White villa has been recognized for its outstanding creativity and ingenious design. This prestigious award celebrates designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
